"The Root of Procrastination: Understanding and Overcoming Thought Errors"

Have you ever wondered how you know you are stuck? You probably think it's because I want to do something, but I can't get myself to do it. Why? What is the root of the problem?

In my practice, I've learned it's because of what I call "thought errors". Your brain's navigation system is outdated, and you are running a program that is not true.

This reminds me of the story my parents told me about how they got lost coming to visit us. My dad used the stock navigation system in his 2012 Toyota Tundra, not his mobile phone's app.

He put our address in as the destination, but the navigation system led him down a dirt road in Georgia. We live in South Carolina!

He wasn't aware the navigation system was running an old program based on an old map. And, he ended up in an undesirable location.

Isn't this life as well? You say you want one thing, and end up not having it, producing it, or creating it. You end up lost. So, you take more actions (inaction is an action) that don't move you forward, and one day you decide it's enough.

The reason this happens is because your brain's map is operating on "thought errors". Some of those errors are:

1.) I don't have enough information, so "I'm not good enough".

2.) I don't have time "to create the perfect result".

3.) I will fail, and "everyone else will know I am a failure".

The thought errors above italicized and underlined in numbers 1 - 3, are the unspoken beliefs. The first part of the sentence is what you actually verbalize to others.

The root of the problem is the thought error, the unspoken part of the sentence. However, we only take action on what we verbalize.

For example, let's take thought number 1, I don't have enough information. So, with that thought, we do more research, ask others opinions or read a book.

Not realizing there is no amount of research, other opinions or book knowledge that will ever make us believe we are good enough. So, we keep seeking to try to scratch an itch we can't reach.

We have to tackle the problem at the root if we want to create sustainable progress in creating our desires.

So, how do we do that:

1.) Awareness

2.) Get help

3.) Practice

The three simple steps are first, become aware of the unspoken thought. The second step is to get help, because it's difficult to monitor our own unspoken beliefs. Lastly, practice. We have to practice challenging the unspoken beliefs, and replace them with facts. Then, practice believing the facts.

These steps require space, intention and support. It's like building a new muscle.

We have one life (maybe), and it's worth it!

Take action today and schedule a 1:1 coaching call. On this call, I will diagnose your thought error, and prescribe the remedy setting you on the path to mental wellness today.

Remember, inaction IS action that gets you no where.
